When we look back at the history of the US Labour Laws, Minimum Wage Legislation seems to have changed the face of industrialization for the country.

A simple movement to end sweatshops gave rise to this system. Sweatshops then used to employ numbers of women and young people and paid them wages which were negligible.

The wages were so less that they could not afford the basic necessities of life. Not only were these workers living with substandard wages but they also had to deal with unsanitary conditions during their long working hours.

The minimum wage legislation has been inspired by Australia’s similar law that attempted and was successful in eradicating substandard wages.

According to the Federal Labour Standards Act, the first ever minimum wage rate was 0.35$ which is nothing compared to the current standard rate at 7.25$. But many states have declared their own minimum wage rate.

This is because different states have a different standard of living. Thus a rate that can match up to the standard of living of that particular state is decided by the state itself.

At the beginning of 2018, the minimum wage rate of about 18 states was increased. The Federal rate remains the same but the state chose to intervene and make it better for their citizens. The companies have to pay the Federal, State or local wage rate, whichever is higher.
