A.J. Welch, Jr. was born in McDonough, Georgia. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and then attended the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University where he graduated in 1969.
In 1970, Mr. Welch returned to his hometown of McDonough to practice with the law firm of Ernest Smith where he later became a partner in 1972. That two man firm has grown into the largest law firm on the south side of Atlanta (with four locations employing more than 65 attorneys and support staff).
Mr. Welch presently represents such clients as: the Henry County Board of Education (since 1970), Butts County Board of Education (since 1980) the Lamar County Board of Education (since 2016), the Henry County Water & Sewerage Authority (since 1980), the Lamar County Water & Sewer Authority (since 2002), the Atlanta Motor Speedway (since 1990), and is the City Attorney for the Cities of Locust Grove (since 1972) and Hampton (since 1971).
Mr. Welch has been the Chief Judge of the Juvenile Court of Henry County since 1975, and is also a former President of the Council of Juvenile Court Judges of Georgia. In 2009, the new Henry County Judicial Center building was dedicated in honor of Judge Welch.
He is a member of the Board of Trustees for Gordon College, and has been a member of the Board of Governors for the State Bar of Georgia since 1994. He was Chairman of the Board for the Henry County Chamber of Commerce for the year 2002. Mr. Welch is also the President of the Georgia School Board Association.
Mr. Welch is married to Kirsten (‘Kit’) Welch, and they have three wonderful children, Andy, Kirsten, and Hunter; and five grandchildren, Dane, Caleb, Nina, Sadie, and Hannah. Mr. Welch and his family attend McDonough Presbyterian Church where he is an active member, Elder, and Chairman of the Finance Committee.
