Alton L. Knighton Jr. focuses on business and corporate law, specifically on tax-exempt bonds, taxable financings, employee benefits, and nonprofit organizations.
He has represented Carilion Clinic and affiliated hospitals in more than $1.5 billion of tax-exempt financings and has served as bond counsel, borrower’s counsel, lender’s counsel, or trustee’s counsel on other bond issues totaling more than $3.5 billion.
His clients include hospitals, nursing homes, retirement communities, schools, colleges, universities, other nonprofit organizations, water and sewer authorities, localities, and banks.
Al serves as corporate counsel for many charitable organizations, including cultural entities and social welfare organizations. He also counsels employers on ESOPs, 401(k) plans, deferred compensation plans, health and life insurance, disability and other welfare plans, cafeteria plans, and dealings with the IRS and Department of Labor.
Al has served as a director and/or officer of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, Planned Parenthood Health Systems, Inc., Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge, Inc., Lewis-Gale Foundation, Greater Southwest Athletic Association, Planned Parenthood Health Systems Action Fund, Inc., Ferrum College Estate Planning Council, Blue Ridge Action Fund, and Phi Beta Kappa Association of the Roanoke Area.
