He is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He completed his undergraduate degree in 1984 from Birmingham-Southern College. He joined the University of Alabama School of Law and earned his Juris Doctorate in 1988. He started serving as a law clerk to the Associate Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, Honorable Janie L. Shores, during the year 1988-1989.
