Anshel Joel “AJ” Kaplan is an associate in the New York office of Seyfarth Shaw LLP and a member of the Labor & Employment and Commercial Litigation practice groups. Mr. Kaplan regularly represents clients before state and federal courts, administrative agencies, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and its state counterparts, and in alternative dispute resolution forums such as the American Arbitration Association.
In the context of single- and multi-plaintiff litigations as well as class and collective actions, Mr. Kaplan defends and counsels clients with respect to a wide variety of employment matters, including discrimination and harassment, wage and hour, wrongful discharge, defamation, whistleblowing and retaliation, covenants not to compete, and breach of contract.
He also has experience representing employers, employee benefit plans, and fiduciaries in employment and employee benefits litigation, including claims arising under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). In addition, Mr. Kaplan has extensive experience representing clients in all facets of complex commercial litigation, tax lien and commercial mortgage foreclosure actions, and commercial real estate litigation.
Mr. Kaplan’s previous experience includes serving as a legal intern for the Attorney General of New York, Cardozo Bet Tzedek Legal Services Clinic, and Cardozo’s Criminal Defense Clinic. In 2011, the New York State Bar Association awarded him first place in its annual writing competition for his article on whether rebuffing a supervisor’s sexual advances constitutes a protected activity pursuant to Section 704(a) of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
