
Anthony M. Gutowski focuses on client counseling, patent procurement, and patent enforcement. Tony advises clients ranging from large, international corporations to smaller companies, on patent matters relating to infringement, validity, due diligence, and licensing. He also focuses his practice on strategic patent portfolio growth, management, and utilization.
Recognized by The Legal 500 U.S. for patent portfolio management and licensing, Tony has prepared and prosecuted several hundred patent applications to patent issuance and has significant experience in securing patent protection outside the United States.
He has developed vast experience in complex U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) proceedings such as inter partes reviews (IPRs), interferences, appeals, reissues, and reexaminations. He has been lead counsel in several complex IPR reexamination proceedings, in addition to taking a lead role in patent litigations. Tony previously led the firm’s mechanical practice.
Tony’s technical background spans a wide array of subjects primarily in the mechanical, electro-mechanical, and communications fields. He frequently represents clients in the automotive, medical device, construction equipment, sporting goods, electronics, and consumer products industries, where solid patent positions form a critical foundation for meeting business goals.
Tony represents one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction equipment and diesel engines in matters, including several very complicated IPRs, inter partes reexamination proceedings, due diligence, patent portfolio development, and counseling.
He handles a substantial amount of intellectual property work for one of the world’s largest automakers; matters involve utility and design patent preparation and prosecution, strategic growth and management of a significant patent portfolio, and counseling.
He also represents clients in several due diligence investigations relating to a number of different technologies, including medical devices, sports-related items and electronics, and construction equipment.
Tony is an instructor for the Patent Resources Group, for which he is currently teaching a course on intellectual property issues in due diligence investigations. He is also an instructor for Strafford Publications, in addition to being a lecturer for IPO’s IP Chat Channel. He frequently lectures at seminars in the United States, Japan, and Europe on all aspects of U.S. patent law.
