Before starting Collins Law LLC in 2014, she served as an Investigator with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity (FHEO) from 2009 to 2014.

While working there, she investigated and resolved many highly sensitive, complex, and tough housing discrimination allegations. She ensured that the recipients of federal funds complied with civil rights laws by performing reviews of fair housing policies and practices.

She grew up in Athens, Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. While studying there, she worked at a Birmingham area personal injury firm as a case manager.

She went on to attend the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law at the Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama and obtained her law degree in the year 2010.

While in law school, she served as an intern at the Alabama Supreme Court for Associate Justice Patricia M. Smith and also worked for the Middle District of Alabama for the Federal Defenders.

April H. Collins also served on the Editorial Board of the Faulkner Law Review and published her note in 2008. She was a member of the executive board of the Black Law Students Association and its mock trial team that competed in the regional and national Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Competition.

She became Public Interest Fellow while serving in the school’s public interest program and also received the Justice Janie L. Shores Scholarship that the Alabama Law Foundation named in honor of the first female Alabama Supreme Court Justice.

She passed the bar exam and earned the license to practice law in the state of Alabama in 2010. She has obtained the membership of the American Bar Association, the Alabama Lawyers Association, Birmingham Bar Association, and Magic City Bar Association.

April Houston Collins has also authored a faith-filled inspirational and motivational memoir titled Only the Strong Thrive that has emerged as a best selling book on Amazon.
