Art has been a member of the New York Bar since 1964. He began practice with a Wall Street law firm, where he received excellent training as a corporate and finance lawyer. After five years, he became inside counsel at four Fortune 500 companies, holding both corporate and division counsel positions.
Arthur James Mannion graduated from Fairfield University and earned his J.D. and LL. M. (Civil Law) degrees from New York University School of Law. He also studied law at the University of Paris, France and the University of Warsaw, Poland on Ford Foundation and Fulbright scholarships.
He devoted a large part of his practice to mergers, acquisitions and finance. He also advised executives on matters of personal concern such as pensions and estate planning.
In the mid-1980s, Art advised the business consulting company he founded with others to guide small and medium-sized technology firms to growth, increasing his legal breadth to include the issues affecting small businesses.
Early in his career, Art realized that his clients did not care how smart he was or how much law he knew. They wanted to operate their business and close their transactions successfully with minimal drama and expense.
He began practicing “preventive” law; that is, finding the route to the client’s goal that minimizes legal complications. This approach avoids entanglements with regulators and limits litigation potential. Clients today are the same. Therefore the firm characterizes its approach as “can do” and measures its success by its clients’ success in achieving their goals in a timely manner.
