Brett P. Belden is a partner and intellectual property lawyer with Foley & Lardner LLP, where he counsels clients with respect to intellectual property matters, with an emphasis on patents relating to electronics and computer-related technologies.
His experience includes patent preparation and prosecution, including prosecution of reissue applications, patent strategy planning, non-infringement/invalidity analysis, product clearance studies, and litigation support.
Mr. Belden also has experience with both the ex parte and inter partes patent reexamination processes, including appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. Mr. Belden is a member of the Electronics Practice.
Mr. Belden has counseled clients in various electrical and computer technologies, including software, hardware circuits and power systems, digital signal processing, control systems, wireless communication systems, cloud computing, semiconductor fabrication methods, business methods, and other technologies.
He has assisted clients in industries and product areas, including aircraft navigation and communication systems, telecommunications and other consumer electronic devices and software, Web-based software such as social networking software, operating systems for computing devices, retail management software, commercial printing systems, automotive power and hybrid drivetrain systems, radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, and retinal implant devices.
Mr. Belden’s technical background includes work experience with industrial automation for a large, national food production company.
Education :
Mr. Belden earned his law degree, with honors, from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2008. While in law school, he served as the executive director for the Intellectual Property Student Organization, president of the Moot Court Board, and note and comment editor for the Wisconsin Law Review.
He received dual bachelor’s degrees, summa cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2005, with majors in electrical engineering and computer science.

Mr. Belden is a registered patent attorney, admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is also admitted to the Wisconsin Bar, the United States District Courts for the Eastern & Western Districts of Wisconsin, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
