Brette Peña is an associate in the public law and policy practice. Ms. Peña advises clients regarding American Indian law and policy in a variety of areas involving project development, litigation, environment, and land and natural resources.

Prior to joining Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, Ms. Peña served as the pro bono legal intern at a public law and policy firm dedicated to serving cultural-heritage clients. In her role, she assisted attorneys in drafting motions and briefs for filing in both state and federal courts on behalf of an American Indian tribe, and she was involved in research regarding the rescission of state tribal recognition. Previously, Ms. Peña served as a legal intern at the Oklahoma Indian Legal Services, as well as at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Tribal Court.

During this time, she worked on the Indian Child Welfare Docket, where her work included tribal court appearances on behalf of the Nation in Indian Child Welfare cases. She also assisted attorneys in updating the Nation’s guidelines for compliance with the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013.Ms. Peña received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and her B.B.A. from the University of Oklahoma. She was also a member of Akin Gump’s 2016 summer associate class.
