He received his B.A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, graduating cum laude in 1977. He received his law degree from Northeastern University School of Law in 1983. He was a law clerk for the Honorable Mark C. Rowland of the Alaska Superior Court from 1983-1984.
He obtained extensive trial and litigation experience working at the Alaska Public Defender Agency until 1989, at which time he joined the firm, practicing in both civil and criminal litigation.
He was admitted to the Alaska Bar in 1984, and in 1989 was admitted to the United States District Court for the District of Alaska, and the Untied States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He was admitted to the United States Supreme Court in 1997.
Mr. Doherty served on the United States District Court Rules Revision Committee and was appointed by the Alaska Supreme Court to the Alaska Court System Pattern Jury Instruction Committee for a three-year term.
Mr. Doherty served as President of the Alaska Chapter of the Federal Bar Association from 2004-2005, and as the Chair of the District of Alaska Lawyer Representatives to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1999 through 2001.
