Carla Miller Handy have practiced consumer bankruptcy law for twenty years and am a shareholder in and managing partner of Bond, Botes & Handy, P.C. in Gadsden, Alabama.
I received my B.A. degree from Auburn University in 1986 and my Juris Doctor degree from The University of Alabama in 1990. When I graduated from law school and passed the Bar in 1990, I went to work as an associate lawyer for a law firm that specialized in oil and gas law in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
This position taught me the beauty and importance of finding a specialized practice area that I could concentrate in and focus on in order to be the best advocate possible for my clients. While oil and gas work was not going to be that specialized practice area for me, this position did, ultimately, lead me to the practice area that would, consumer bankruptcy law.
I returned to my hometown, Gadsden, Alabama, in 1993, and mentored under one of the best bankruptcy attorneys I have known, Charles D. Martin. Charlie taught me that, as consumer bankruptcy attorneys, we represent the working people who make up the backbone of this country and who are experiencing one of the worst times of their lives.
He impressed upon me the importance of being compassionate toward the needs of my bankuptcy clients and to zealously advocate for their right to address their debt in an orderly fashion in the bankruptcy courts.
I now have the privilege of working with the best group of consumer bankruptcy attorneys in the State of Alabama. The attorneys of the Bond & Botes offices throughout the states of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee excel in the quality representation of clients not only in bankruptcy but also collection lawsuit defense, Fair Debt Collection and Fair Credit Reporting cases.
I currently serve on the Executive Committee for the Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section of the Alabama State Bar. I am a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, a member of my local Etowah County Bar Association, and a member of the bar association of bankruptcy attorneys for the Northern District of Alabama, Eastern Division.
