Carlos E. Duarte-Guevara, Ph.D., focuses on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications related to electronic devices and computer-implemented methods. His practice also includes opinion writing and portfolio development.
Carlos has ample experience in all aspects of patent prosecution, including drafting, prosecuting, and appealing patent applications. He develops patent portfolios in a broad range of electronic technologies (e.g., semiconductor devices, microelectromechanical systems, memories, and wireless systems) and computer-implemented technologies (e.g., systems for artificial intelligence, audio and video processing, and data visualization). Carlos also develops design patent portfolios focused on graphical user interfaces.
Carlos’s opinion writing has focused on invalidity and freedom to operate assessments for field-effect transistor and MEMS patents. He has coordinated prior art searches and developed claim charts for opinions in preparation for inter partes review (IPR) proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Prior to joining Finnegan, Carlos worked in the technology transfer office of the University of Illinois, the MEMS division of a large semiconductor manufacturing company, and the diagnostics division of a global medical device company.
Carlos’s doctoral research focused on field-effect transistors used as biological sensors in polymerase chain reactions. He has authored or co-authored more than a dozen journal papers, is a co-inventor on two patents related to his dissertation, and serves as a peer reviewer for Sensors and Actuators B.
Carlos’s pro bono activities include assisting asylum seekers before immigration courts through Human Rights First.
