Cary Greene focuses his practice on food and beverage law. He counsels wineries, breweries, distilleries, and food suppliers on a wide range of regulatory and government policy matters at the local, state, federal, and international levels.
These matters include Federal Alcohol Administration Act and Chapter 51 of the Internal Revenue Code, new Food Safety Modernization Act and Nutrition Labeling of Standard Menu Items rulemaking implementation, Nutrition Facts Labeling requirements and claims, food allergen labeling disclosures and exemptions, organic certification and sustainability claims, use of and additions to nutrient databases, as well as formulation and manufacturing practices, which includes the addition of ingredients, additives and substances generally recognized as safe.
As the former chief operating officer and general counsel to WineAmerica, Cary has substantial experience within the industry, drafting legislation, setting national policy strategy and agendas, testifying before legislative bodies, and advocating for the interests of American wineries at all levels of government.
During his tenure at WineAmerica, Cary successfully supported the passage of winery direct-to-consumer shipping legislation in Maryland and New Jersey, and worked with distillers and brewers to defeat state and federal legislation that threatened to restrict the sale and distribution of alcohol beverages.
In addition to his alcohol, food, and beverage experience, Cary helps consumer facing companies assess risk and find practical business solutions for a wide range of complex regulatory questions ranging from labeling of textiles and jewelry to in-store weapons and home delivery policies.
