
Charles G. Carter is a partner and intellectual property lawyer with Foley & Lardner LLP. Dr. Carter’s practice focuses in the areas of client counseling and the strategic development of intellectual property portfolios relating to U.S. and foreign patents in chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and material science technologies.
He also advises clients on business risks and licensing strategies related to intellectual property. Dr. Carter is a member of the firm’s Chemical, Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Practice, as well as the firm’s Food & Beverage Industry, Life Sciences Industry and Energy Industry Teams.
In addition to his legal experience, Dr. Carter has over ten years of experience as a research scientist and manager in industrial and academic settings.
His research included work related to biologically active natural products, molecular diagnostics, polymer composites, alternative energy technologies, agricultural chemicals, organic photochemistry, water treatment chemicals, and other specialty chemicals. In conjunction with his research, he has been awarded 48 U.S. patents.
Education :
Dr. Carter graduated from the University of Rochester (B.Sc., with honors, chemistry), the University of Oregon (Ph.D., organic chemistry) and the Georgetown University Law Center (J.D., magna cum laude).
As part of his experience as a research scientist, Dr. Carter held research fellowships at the Max-Planck Institut Fur Strahlenchemie in Muelheim, Germany, and at Yale University.

Dr. Carter is admitted to practice in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
