Charles T. Collins-Chase focuses on district court litigation and appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where he served as a clerk. With a chemical engineering background, he has particular expertise in pharmaceuticals, energy and renewables, and chemical products and has assisted numerous clients in Hatch-Waxman litigation.

Charles has handled district court cases at every stage of litigation, from pre-litigation through discovery, dispositive motions, and trial. He particularly enjoys writing briefs and motions. He has represented several branded pharmaceutical companies in Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDA) litigations under the Hatch-Waxman Act and also represents clients in the areas of clean energy and renewable materials.

Charles also has extensive experience in Federal Circuit appeals. He has argued before the Federal Circuit and has assisted clients in nearly two dozen appeals from district courts and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), involving technologies ranging from polymers and pharmaceuticals to software and interactive toys.

He has represented clients in numerous appeals involving patent eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101, including petitioners in the Bilski v. Kappos case before the U.S. Supreme Court. He also submitted a Federal Circuit amicus brief on behalf of Genetic Alliance in the Myriad Genetics case.

Charles has broad expertise in clean energy and renewable technologies. Charles has handled litigation, appeals, and due diligence matters for renewable industry clients. His work spans a wide range of technologies, ranging from renewable diesel fuel and other biofuels to pollution control systems and biobased polymers.

Before law school, Charles completed graduate studies in engineering for sustainable development at the University of Cambridge and conducted research on the feasibility of biodiesel production using a novel reactor system in a community-scale project in South Africa.

His undergraduate thesis involved synthesizing and characterizing thermosetting liquid-molding polymers made from soybean oil and other renewable resources. Charles also devotes a portion of his time to pro bono matters. He argued before the Federal Circuit on behalf of a veteran seeking service-connected disability benefits.

He also successfully represented a client seeking Social Security disability benefits, writing the briefs and arguing at a hearing before an administrative law judge. Charles serves as an adjunct professor for the Federal Circuit Practice Seminar at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School.
