Charles E. O’Bryan is an experienced litigator with a broad legal background gained from working as both trial counsel and an appellate advocate with over thirty years experience. As a member of the Casualty Department, he focuses his practice in the areas of complex product liability, construction injury, property litigation, music/entertainment litigation, intellectual property and maritime litigation.
In his product liability practice, Charles represents a number of manufacturers as well as lift, elevator and track servicing entities. He has represented property owners and contractors in defense of statutory liability claims under New York’s Labor Law as well as in various maritime actions.
Charles devotes a portion of his practice to defending claims brought against clients involving employment discrimination, civil liberties, civil rights and welfare rights actions. Throughout his career, he has prosecuted and defended cases involving prisoners’ rights covering a range of fact patterns from alleged Eighth Amendment violations to substantive due process claims.
He has also defended employment and housing discrimination claims in state and federal forums.
Charles handles a wide array of other litigation crossing multiple disciplines, including defending doctors and hospitals in malpractice actions, copyright and trademark infringement cases, torts, environmental litigation and health (HMO) litigation.
Charles began his legal career at the South Bronx Legal Services Corporation. There he developed his skills as a trial attorney gaining experience in Family Court, Landlord-Tenant Court and administrative forums. This opened doors to assisting other community organizations and welfare and privacy advocates in the federal courts.
Charles graduated with B.A. from Columbia University and earned his juris doctor at Cornell Law School. He is admitted to practice in the state of New York.
