Christine J. Sommer represents clients in government regulatory and criminal investigations, as well as criminal and civil litigation. With more than a decade of experience, she handles antitrust and consumer protection issues involving the US Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, the US Federal Trade Commission and state enforcement agencies, as well as cartel and merger investigations involving foreign governments.
Ms. Sommer’s professional background covers a range of litigation and investigation experience and she has handled numerous matters involving regulated or highly complex industries.
Specific industries in which she works include telecommunications and media, Internet advertising, natural gas, paper manufacturing and products, dairy, motion pictures and concert/event promotion, newspapers, defense/space contracts, transportation, vitamins, and trade associations.
In the conduct and merger context, Ms. Sommer responds to investigations by both the DOJ’s Antitrust Division and various state actions under Section 1 and investigations by the Antitrust Division under Section 7.
She leads and co-leads cases involving coordination between the Antitrust Division, Federal Trade Commission and other administrative agencies regarding a range of complex antitrust issues.
In addition to investigations, Ms. Sommer has a range of private and government litigation experience, including managing voluminous and technically challenging discovery, taking and defending depositions (including experts), and preparing witnesses for investigations and trials.
She has authored dispositive and procedural substantive motions, including white papers, motions to dismiss, motions to compel discovery, motions regarding the admissibility of expert testimony and other evidence, and motions for summary judgment. Prior to joining WilmerHale, Ms. Sommer practiced with another prominent Washington DC firm.
Ms. Sommer is a member of the Antitrust and Litigation Sections of the American Bar Association. She has served in the Antitrust Law Section Leadership on both substantive and administrative committees, including as co-chair for the Books and Treatises Committee, and in that capacity, edited several authoritative treatises on antitrust law.
Most recently, Ms. Sommer co-chaired the ABA editorial board overseeing the publication of second edition of Consumer Protection Law Developments , a two-volume guide to US consumer protection law.
