Courtney Adams Thornton focuses her practice on intellectual property with an emphasis on trademark, copyright, and internet law matters. She works with clients throughout the life cycle of a brand, from clearance and registration to contract and license drafting, enforcement and litigation.
Her practice includes both domestic and foreign trademark prosecution, defending trademark oppositions and cancellations before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, litigating before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and federal district courts, and representing clients in domain name disputes.
Courtney has also advised clients in a variety of other internet-related matters, including those involving the DMCA and takedown notices, online copyright and trademark infringement, social media, and misappropriation of likeness.
Prior to attending law school, Courtney worked for over ten years in advertising, sales and marketing in San Francisco, CA and Indianapolis, IN for Fortune 500 software and computer technology and pharmaceutical and medical device companies, as well as mobile search and search engine optimization startups. Courtney’s focus on intellectual property allows her to apply her past experience in business and technology to her legal practice.
In addition to her IP practice, Courtney has also advised clients across the country in connection with environmental issues, including OSHA compliance and citation appeals, California’s Proposition 65, hazardous waste cleanups, and Clean Water Act citizen suits and compliance litigation.
Courtney received her B.A. in Journalism and Advertising from Stanford University in 2000, where she also competed on the track and cross-country teams. She earned her J.D., cum laude, from Emory University School of Law.
During law school, Courtney completed internships with the Coca-Cola Company and with the Barton Child Law and Policy Center at Emory University.
