Relying on extensive experience in both patent procurement and patent litigation, Darren M. Jiron focuses on building strategically developed patent portfolios. With a special interest in helping high-tech and fast-growing companies craft patent plans to block competitors and build corporate value, Darren works closely with clients to ensure their patents align with and support their business goals.
Darren is also skilled in defensive and offensive patent portfolio assessment, patent validity and infringement opinions, due diligence, product clearance studies, patent portfolio management, and patent prosecution.
Darren has more than a decade of litigation experience and has represented clients in all phases of patent litigation before numerous U.S. district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).
He also leads post-grant review (PGR) proceedings before Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and has extensive experience in the strategic use of patent reexamination and PGR in conjunction with parallel litigation. He has defended various Sony, Nikon, and LG Electronics entities in multiple patent infringement lawsuits involving consumer electronics, mobile telephones, and display technologies.
Darren has experience in a wide range of technology areas, including software, user interfaces, semiconductor design and fabrication, display devices, mobile telephone design and operation, advanced materials, batteries, optics, imaging systems, power inverters, and control systems.
He also has worked extensively in the area of solid state lighting devices and applications, especially including GaN-based LEDs and lasers. Darren previously worked as a project engineer engaged in research and development of advanced materials systems, composites, controls systems, and electro-mechanical devices.
Darren helped a startup medical device company obtain eight new patents in a single day for promising technology relating to the treatment of sleep disordered breathing. He developed strategic patent portfolios for companies focused on machine vision, augmented reality, and autonomous vehicles. He has handled more than 75 Track 1 accelerated examination applications.
Darren is an active member of Finnegan’s Israel practice. He presents regularly in Israel, teaches an advanced patent law course at Haifa University, and works with many companies in Israel to assemble strategic patent plans that serve as roadmaps for development of the companies’ patents and other types of intellectual property. Darren also serves on the firm’s management committee.
