Debra Gelson is a certified criminal trial attorney at Tully Rinckey PLLC’s Binghamton office, Debra focuses her practice on criminal defense, as well as family and matrimonial law. She represents clients in matters including domestic violence, child removal actions and juvenile delinquency hearings, and student disciplinary hearings alleging sexual assault.
For over two decades, Debra ran her own practice in New Jersey, where she defended clients charged with state and federal criminal offenses, municipal court matters, domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, child removal actions, disciplinary hearings, civil rights actions, administrative hearings and municipal appeals.
She is certified by the New Jersey Supreme Court as a criminal trial attorney, and she spent many years as an assistant county prosecutor and the director of a sex crimes and child abuse unit. Debra also has experience investigating and defending police misconduct allegations.
At one time, Debra worked for the New Jersey Department of Children and Families Services, where she provided legal research and review of Administrative Law Judges’ decisions regarding child abuse or neglect cases at the New Jersey Department of Children and Families. As a private attorney, Debra later represented parents in child removal actions.
Debra was appointed in 2001 as a municipal court judge and was cross-assigned to serve in numerous New Jersey municipalities as a conflict judge. She is a former president of the Monmouth County Municipal Judges Association and is active with the National Association of Women Judges.
She is approved as a legal expert by the United Nations Development Programme to assist the implementation of democratic initiatives in third world countries. Besides her work as an attorney and a judge, Debra taught numerous law courses at Georgian Court University on both graduate and undergraduate levels, and served as director of graduate business programs.
In addition, she taught continuing legal education courses in municipal court, trial advocacy, professionalism and judicial ethics. With significant experience in higher education and sexual assault offenses, Debra has become an expert in the evolving area of disciplinary hearings involving allegations of campus sexual assault advising students who were victimized as well as accused.
