Ellie Clendenin focuses her practice on all aspects of employee benefits law. She assists clients with the design, implementation and operation of tax-qualified retirement and savings plans, and health and welfare programs. Ellie handles all aspects of employee benefits plans in mergers and acquisitions, including the due diligence reviews and transitioning of employees.
She also assists clients with filing for determination letters from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), correcting violations under the Department of Labor’s (DOL) Voluntary Fiduciary Correction Program and correcting plan errors under the IRS’s Employee Plans Compliance Resolution System (EPCRS).
Ellie assists clients with the proper classification of workers as employees or independent contractors and has filed submissions with the IRS under the Voluntary Classification Settlement Program. She also reviews Administrative Service Agreements and assists clients with Requests for Proposal (RFPs).
Ellie is admitted to practice in Virginia and an active member in the Virginia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. She is also the assistant vice chair of the American Bar Association’s Employee Benefit Subcommittee on Mergers and Acquisitions, and she serves as secretary of the board of the Central Virginia Employee Benefits Council.
Ellie received her Juris Doctor degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law. While in law school, Ellie served as an editor of the Washington and Lee Environmental Law Digest. She volunteered as an income tax assistant with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.
She was also a member of the Labor and Employment Law Mock Trial Team, which won the semi-finals at the American Bar Association’s regional competition in Washington, D.C. Ellie graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington and Lee University.
