
Elizabeth J. Chandler’s practice concentrates on federal and state court legal defense on behalf of corporations and financial institutions including national banks, mortgage originators, servicers, and investors in lawsuits and contested foreclosures involving claims arising under the Truth in Lending Act (TILA), Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), Consumer Finance Protection Board (CFPB), and those based on state fair lending, collection and deceptive trade practice laws, breach of contract, fraud and state regulations.
Elizabeth has extensive experience litigating complex cases as a private practice attorney and as a federal prosecutor. Prior to joining McGuireWoods, Elizabeth’s litigation practice focused on contract, fraud, corporate and partnership governance, and mortgage lending and real estate disputes, as well as California Proposition 65 defense litigation, as a private practice attorney with northern California law firms.
In the public sector, Elizabeth worked as a trial attorney for the United States Commodities Futures Trading Commission in Washington, D.C. During that time, Elizabeth successfully prosecuted several wide-ranging fraudulent trading cases involving multi-state and multi-million dollar Ponzi schemes in federal courts throughout the United States.
Elizabeth began her commercial litigation practice as an antitrust and commercial litigation associate with an international law firm in Washington, D.C. where she worked on high profile merger and acquisition cases and multi-state antitrust cases involving the aerospace, publishing, advertising media, computer hardware, and pharmaceutical industries.
After attending law school where she concentrated on business and financial securities law, Elizabeth served as a federal law clerk for the Honorable Reginald W. Gibson at the United States Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C.
EXPERIENCE :
- Won early dismissal of action against defendant client, a corporate director, in an action involving claims of self-dealing and breach of fiduciary duties allegedly owed to the corporation and co-directors.
- Successfully litigated early favorable settlement, including permanent injunctive relief, for national corporate client asserting trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition, and breach of contract claims against former officers and employees.
- Obtained district court judgments, temporary restraining orders and other injunctive relief freezing bank accounts and other assets held by unregistered foreign exchange traders who fraudulently solicited investors online and misappropriated investors’ funds through complex electronic transactions involving multiple financial institutions and accounts nationwide.
- Successfully prosecuted commodities trader responsible for defrauding over 200 investors worldwide of over $32 million in foreign exchange Ponzi scheme, obtaining injunctive and monetary relief in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.
- As part of a commercial litigation team, successfully defended Fortune 500 computer hardware company against federal antitrust and patent infringement and misuse claims as well as state contract and fraud claims.
