Elizabeth E. (Liz) Owerbach is an associate in Mayer Brown’s Washington DC office and a member of the Government Relations & Public Law and International Trade practices. She advises a range of clients on addressing challenges and seeking opportunities in today’s regulatory climate, including compliance with economic sanctions, foreign trade regulations, and export control regimes.
Prior to joining Mayer Brown in 2018, Liz was an associate at another major international trade practice in Washington DC. While there, she assisted clients in the aerospace, financial, Fintech, logistics, energy and other sectors on a variety of international trade matters.
Her work included developing and implementing company-wide trade compliance programs; handling daily OFAC sanctions, ITAR, and EAR questions; and advising clients facing government investigations.
Liz earned her law degree from Columbia Law School, where she was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, earned a certificate of achievement from the Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law, and served on the Editorial Board of the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law.
Liz earned a BA in international relations and Russian and Post-Soviet studies from the College of William & Mary and completed a Fulbright fellowship in Togliatti, Russia. She has worked with a variety of national and international organizations on immigration and anti-human trafficking issues. Prior to law school, Liz worked to implement human rights programs in Central Asia at the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative.
