Emma C. Mata is a partner in the Commercial Litigation and Health Care practice groups of the Houston office of Seyfarth Shaw LLP. With over 17 years’ experience as a trial lawyer, she has tried several cases to verdict in Texas state and federal courts and in arbitration proceedings.
Mrs. Mata represents businesses and individuals in commercial disputes, including business litigation, business and employment related contract disputes, trade secret and non-compete disputes, commercial contract disputes, produ
ct liability matters, and personal injury matters. In addition to serving as trial counsel in lawsuits, she also counsels clients on pre-suit resolutions and negotiations, contract negotiations, employee matters, and risk management. Her clients include both businesses and individuals in a variety of industries, with a special focus on energy and healthcare.
Mrs. Mata also represents physicians and other licensed health care professionals in administrative proceedings before state licensing boards. She started her practice defending doctors, hospitals, and health care personnel in medical malpractice lawsuits, which provided her with a strong background in analyzing potential risk for hospitals, physicians, and medical practices.
Mrs. Mata is an active member of the Seyfarth Shaw organization. She is the leader of the firm’s Houston office Diversity Action Team and Seyfarth Women’s Network. Dedicated to her pro bono practice, Mrs. Mata represents children in immigration proceedings through the KIND (Kids in Need of Defense) organization.
In February 2012, Mrs. Mata was selected as Pro Bono Attorney of the Month by the KIND organization for her work in helping three young siblings find care and protection in the United States. In addition to this accolade, she was prominently featured in April 2012 by NBC Latino for her extensive Pro Bono work with KIND and her dedication to the Houston, Texas community.
