Geoffrey M. Thorne is an attorney in the firm’s litigation department. He represents individuals and companies — both local businesses and Fortune 500 corporations — in a variety of practice areas, concentrating primarily on matters relating to employment and business disputes.
Mr. Thorne has successfully defended employers in state and federal courts against wage-and-hour class actions and other representative lawsuits, as well as single plaintiff claims for wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment and retaliation.
In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Thorne regularly advises employers on best-practices in the workplace, including counseling management on wage-specific issues, compliance with anti-discrimination and harassment laws, compensation plans, employee classifications, work place investigations and terminations.
Mr. Thorne also provides trainings to management on a variety of topics, such as sexual harassment, employees’ use of social media, and employment law updates.
Mr. Thorne’s legal accomplishments, and his commitment to the San Diego community, earned him the San Diego Daily Transcript’s “Young Attorneys” award in 2013 and was a Finalist for the San Diego Business Journal’s “Emerging Generations” award in 2014.
Mr. Thorne serves on the Board of Directors of the Coronado Chamber of Commerce and recently received the Volunteer of the Year Award.
Prior to joining Higgs, Mr. Thorne graduated from the University of California, Irvine, where he completed the Honors program in Sociology, and played Division I baseball for its nationally ranked program.
He received his law degree from the University of California Berkeley, School of Law. During law school, Mr. Thorne served as a staff editor for the Berkeley Business Law Journal and the Dodd-Frank Symposium.
He also interned at the East Bay Community Law Center, Clean Slate Division, and was a judicial extern to the Honorable Jeffrey B. Barton at the San Diego Superior Court.
