Gilbert D. Porter is known for handling first-of-a-kind transactions, addressing new technologies, innovative structures and markets, and novel adaptations of existing products. Gil’s reputation as an innovator in the financing world arose early in his career with his development of the unique financing strategy that was used to support the independent candidacy of John Anderson for President of the United States in 1980.
Whether constructing and financing power projects in difficult markets, deploying and financing new energy technologies, seeking novel financing solutions for large-dollar exposures or high-risk customers, considering large-scale multinational joint ventures deploying novel technologies or planning investment in emerging markets, clients have reached out to Gil for his guidance for more than 35 years.
Given his experience, it is easy to see why Gil was selected to co-chair Haynes and Boone’s Projects Practice Group. In all, Gil has led more than 200 project development and finance transactions – and has advised on hundreds of others – in more than 35 countries throughout North America, Mexico, the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia, Russia, the Middle East and South Africa.
Gil’s experience spans a broad range of project industries and financial products, including a number of first-of-its-kind industry-leading precedents. Since 2001, six of his deals have been recognized as “Deals of the Year” by industry publications.
While best known for his leadership in the project finance industry, Gil’s practice also includes joint ventures, emerging market investment, workouts, financial product development, structured lending, negotiated mergers and acquisitions, and mezzanine and venture financing.
His span of work places a particular emphasis on the energy industry, telecommunications and other regulated industries and on new-technology companies that impact those industries.
Even outside of the project and joint venture areas, many of Gil’s transactions have developed and established precedents for current financial products, including early derivatives and securitization models, pioneering production payment and equipment trust products, leasing and synthetic leasing products employing unusual assets and addressing unique overseas legal regimes, equity monetization products and other products providing clients customized access to capital markets that were previously unavailable.
Because of his significant experience in such products and his knowledge of the industries, Gil has also successfully assisted clients in prominent workouts, restructurings and bankruptcies, both in the U.S. and in emerging markets.
