Hilary A. Sefton focuses her practice on all areas of family law, including divorce, child support and custody matters, post-decree issues, surrogacy contracts and adoptions. Hilary’s passion for family law, her extensive experience in navigating clients through a wide spectrum of family law matters and her numerous ties to the community enable her to effectively guide her clients.
Hilary’s clients, particularly mothers with minor children and working mothers, recognize that she is a compassionate advocate for them. Many of Hilary’s past clients not only attest to Hilary’s knowledge, skills and strong representation during their difficult divorce, but they continue to seek her advice and representation for any ongoing or new issues regarding their children and finances.
Hilary is warm and empathetic but also a fierce protector of her client’s rights and wishes. In addition to her work at Grunyk Family Law, Hilary loves to spend time with her family—in particular, her two young children. Now that both children are in elementary school, Hilary has entered the world of scheduling and keeping track of various after school sports and activities, as well as maintaining her duties as a room-mom at school.
Hilary currently serves as a board member on the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Board. Her primary role is to raise funds to support the Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and, in particular, the Cancer Center scheduled to open in Hinsdale in 2016.
Hilary is also an active member of the Infant Welfare Society—a volunteer organization that provides health care and supplies to under or uninsured children and women in the Chicago area. She participates in her community to raise funds, plan events, and donate her time to this meaningful cause. Additionally, Hilary is a member of EPWNG, a professional women’s networking group in the western suburbs of Chicago.
Hilary grew up in Michigan on both the east and west side of the state and her extended family still resides there. She attended the University of Michigan for her undergraduate degree and found her passion for family law while enrolled in a family law class at John Marshall Law School, taught by adjunct professor Danya A. Grunyk. Hilary then joined Danya’s firm after graduation and is now a partner at the firm.
Hilary is a member of several local bar associations and has served on various committees for the DuPage County Bar Association. She is an active speaker, having done so at several Bar Association education events for her peers.
Since 2012 Hilary has annually been chosen as one of the state’s “rising star” attorneys by Super Lawyers magazine. She was chosen as a candidate for the America’s Most Honored Professional 2014 Award and was named in Chicago magazine as one of the top lawyers in Illinois in 2012 and 2014.
