The founder of the firm, Ian C. McKinley, is a native of Boulder, Colorado, and the son of an immigrant from (Guadalajara) Mexico who graduated from Stanford Law School prior to passing away in a house fire when Ian was 2 years old. .
When Ian was 15 years old, he went as an exchange student to live with a family in Puebla, Mexico, in part in search of his lost heritage and to learn Spanish, and he fell in love with Mexico’s people, culture and lifestyle — so much so, that after graduating high school, he moved back to Puebla and began his undergraduate studies at a private university there, la Universidad de las Américas (UDLA).
He earned a football scholarship playing a wide-receiver for the UDLA Aztecas football team, and completed the first three years of his undergraduate degree in International Affairs there, where a majority of his classes were taught in Spanish.
After returning to Boulder to complete his undergraduate degree in 2007 at the University of Colorado, he returned to the UDLA again to earn a master’s degree in North American Studies and Political Science, during which time he worked with Mexico’s former Secretary of Economy and Foreign Affairs, Luis Ernesto Derbez Bautista, his master’s thesis advisor.
Ian ultimately married the daughter of the family that had hosted him when he was an exchange student in high school, and their three children are dual citizens of the United States and Mexico.
Ian knew going into law school that with such life experience, he was uniquely well-equipped to serve the Spanish-speaking immigrant community living in Colorado. While studying law at the University of Colorado Law School, Ian’s primary focus was on immigration law, and he was awarded the Edward C. King Award, the only faculty-voted award for outstanding leadership and achievement.
After passing the Colorado bar exam in 2013, he opened a branch office for the Aguirre Law Group, P.C., which in 2016 became the McKinley Law Group, L.L.C. Ian takes great pride in being able to provide exceptional legal service in the areas of immigration, criminal, family and civil law.
