With more than 30 years of experience in patent litigation, James Moore Bollinger’s primary practice spans pharmaceuticals, electronics, computer science and e-commerce. He has acted as lead trial counsel on numerous patent and trademark disputes and has tried cases both to a jury and to the bench.
Jim has tried patent cases in federal court, including a string of patent disputes, to successful jury verdicts :

He has also represented several overseas clients in international forums on patent and IP matters and actively advises and assists clients in building and managing IP portfolios, defending and prosecuting post-grant reviews (IPRs), prosecuting patents in international forums, and developing and defending branding and trademarks.
His clients include MetLife Inc., Rakuten Inc., Levain Bakery, Pin Foundations, Collective[i], Foursquare Inc., B&H Photo Inc., Partners Healthcare, Spire Inc., and several schools including MIT and Yale.
Representative Matters :
- Won a $10.2 million jury verdict of willful patent infringement against Perrigo Inc., representing Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
- Secured the district court’s granting of Cross Commerce Media’s motions for summary judgment on descriptiveness and secondary meaning, motions to exclude experts, motion to cancel or amend CI’s trademarks, and motion for attorneys’ fees in a declaratory judgment trademark action.
- Won a jury verdict of willful patent infringement with fees awarded against AIA Ltd., representing Magatteau Ltd. in a two-week trial.
- Won summary judgment dismissal of patent claims as invalid on both anticipation and obviousness grounds in Wrigley Jr. Co. v. Cadbury Adams USA LLC.
- Successfully defended Sperry & Hutchins against allegations of trademark infringement, obtaining a ruling denying the plaintiff’s motion for preliminary injunction and reaching a favorable resolution for the client.
