James V. Meath has earned a national reputation defending multi-national corporations and businesses in all aspects of labor and employment and litigation matters. Specifically, Mr. Meath advises domestic and international corporations on regulatory compliance issues in cross-border transactions, business relocations, expatriation and repatriation issues, plant construction and foreign inbound investments in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

He also advises and defends local governments and agencies of the state governments in labor and employment matters. Mr. Meath has expertise in all aspects of economic development at the local, state, and federal levels. Additionally, he oversees class action defense cases for corporations and businesses regarding alleged violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Fair Labor Standard Act (FSLA).

Mr. Meath has extensive leadership experience serving within Williams Mullen as a former chairman of the board of directors, vice chairman of the board and chair of the Labor, Employment and Immigration section. During his 20-year tenure as section chair, the Labor, Employment and Immigration department gained a national reputation, as recognized by Chambers USA.

Mr. Meath has been an active member of the American Arbitration Association since 1985. In that time, he has served as an arbitrator on the Commercial Panel, Employment Panel, and Large Complex Case Panel, chairing several large and complex case arbitrations that span numerous industry groups, substantive law and contract issues as well as cases that involve complex executive employment agreement disputes for U.S. subsidiaries of foreign corporations.

In addition, Mr. Meath is active in the District of Columbia Bar, Virginia State Bar, Virginia Bar Association, and the American Bar Association, serving on a variety of committees, including the Alternate Dispute in Labor and Employment Law Committee and the Labor and Employment Law Section.

He has held numerous leadership roles in these organizations including, section or committee chair, and in particular, has served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Virginia Bar Association in 2003, and presided as the 115th President of the Virginia Bar Association in 2005. Mr. Meath also participated in establishing the Virginia Bar Association’s Committee on Veterans Issues and chaired the committee for its inaugural year.

Mr. Meath teaches Economics of Law at the University of Richmond T.C. Williams School of Law, where he has been an adjunct professor for over eight years. He initiated and developed the course, which continues to evolve in conjunction with the business and practice of law. Mr. Meath also conducts seminars for industry groups in both the public and private sectors on a variety of legal topics.

Mr. Meath devotes numerous hours to nonprofit board work, structuring by-laws and other corporate governance issues. In October 2013, he became President of the Virginia Law Foundation, an organization that provides funding to programs like the Rule of Law Project, the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program, and Lawyers Helping Lawyers.

Mr. Meath is licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Eleventh Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

He earned his Juris Doctor degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond and holds a master’s degree in Urban Affairs from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Mr. Meath earned a bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University. In 2007, Old Dominion University presented Mr. Meath with the Distinguished Alumni Award from College of Arts and Letters.
