Janet Smith represents clients in a broad range of intellectual property matters. She represents parties involved in intellectual property litigation – including patent litigation, trademark litigation and copyright infringement litigation – at the administrative, trial and appellate levels.
She assists clients with pre-filing investigations, pleadings and motions drafting, fact and expert discovery, motions practice, trial and settlement negotiations. Janet also helps clients enhance the value of their intellectual property assets through the procurement, assessment, registration, and management of trademark and patent portfolios.
Janet has authored or co-authored multiple articles on intellectual property matters, including a note for the William & Mary Law Review on indefiniteness as an invalidity defense and an article on trade secrets and the America Invents Act in Patent Office Litigation.
During law school, Janet worked as an extern at the Supreme Court of Virginia for Justice Elizabeth A. McClanahan. She earned her Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from William & Mary, where she was a lead articles editor for the William & Mary Law Review. She also received an MSc. in Violence, Conflict & Development from SOAS, University of London and a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Dartmouth College.
