J. Jay Strimel is a Senior Counsel in the Labor & Employment Department in the Firm’s Houston office. Mr. Strimel’s career has been primarily in employment-based immigration law, representing international companies in developing global mobility policies, obtaining necessary work authorization and visas and permanent resident status for employees, advising and instructing on employer immigration compliance issues, assisting employers in obtaining necessary US Coast Guard exemptions for work in Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) waters, securing necessary work visas to allow professional athletes to train and compete in the United States, and providing representation of employers in government investigations and audits.
He represents a variety of multinational corporate clients, many in the oilfield services industry, as well as technology, shipping, construction and also educational institutions including universities as well as primary and secondary schools.
Mr. Strimel has represented employers in obtaining U.S. Department of Labor approval of applications for alien employment certification (PERM) and has significant experience with a full range of employment-based immigrant visa strategies, including demonstrations of extraordinary ability. He has represented foreign nationals during their adjustment of status to lawful permanent residence and has counseled foreign nationals seeking consular processing of employment-based visas abroad.
Mr. Strimel is well-versed in issues arising from federal government audits of employers’ workplace immigration compliance and also addressing OCS violations. Mr. Strimel has experience in organizing and performing I-9 and Public Access File audits and has developed training materials for client corporations on how to properly prepare and maintain immigration and employment compliance-related document files.
Prior to practicing law, Mr. Strimel worked for 14 years in the aerospace industry at Kennedy Space Center in planning, scheduling, and project management for the Ground Communication and Launch Processing System areas of the Space Shuttle Program.
