Jennifer Helland has a unique background for working with families going through a divorce since she is a trained psychotherapist. She also has extensive trial experience as a former prosecutor and as a family law attorney.
Jennifer has also received training in domestic mediation. She is a dedicated child advocate, and represents Knies, Helland & McPherson clients in high-conflict family and children matters as well as high-asset cases.
Prior to joining Jennifer and Kelly in Knies, Helland & McPherson, Jennifer worked as an associate attorney at Black and Graham at The Gasper Law Group as a family law and dependency and neglect attorney.
Jennifer’s experience and deep understanding of family law and military issues, to include her familiarity with multiple local experts, allows her to work complex custody and property matters, with outstanding results for her clients.
Earlier in her career, Jennifer served as a Deputy District Attorney for the 4th Judicial District in El Paso County, Colorado. Her experience allows her to educate clients on the process and complexity of issues involved in family and criminal matters when domestic violence is an issue.
Jennifer’s experience as former prosecutor allows her to bring significant trial experience to every case she becomes involved with.
Jennifer is a graduate of The University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minnesota. In keeping with the nationally recognized St. Thomas tradition of commitment to public service, Jennifer has dedicated ten years to public service primarily with assisting juveniles and their families.
Prior to law school, Jennifer assisted in writing and implementing a district-wide truancy policy and program for local school districts in Minnesota and served as a behavioral specialist.
Jennifer is a member of the Colorado Bar Association, El Paso County Bar Association, and Ben S. Wendelken American Inn of Court. She serves on the Board of Governors for the Colorado Bar Association and is the former Family Law section chair of the El Paso County Bar Association.
Jennifer has written numerous articles that have been published locally on different family law and military law matters and has taught other attorneys and pro se litigants at numerous conferences.
Jennifer was a college ice hockey player and continues to volunteer as a USA Hockey coach in the Monument area. She also coaches youth soccer, is a founding member of Liberty Tree Academy, a D49 charter school, former HOA board member, and steward of a Little Free Library.
