Joan Swartz McKay grew up in the small resort town of Spring Lake, near Lake Michigan. So it did not take much persuasion by her husband Larry for her to agree to leave the Minnesota Solicitor General’s Office in 1976, two years after they graduated from Michigan Law School, to move to Frankfort and embark on a general law practice.
Joan concentrates her practice on municipal law, zoning and land use planning, and real estate transactions and litigation. Representative clients include Crystal Mountain Resort and the City of Frankfort.
She has been a member of the State Bar of Michigan since 1976, and is currently a member of the Municipal Law Section of the State Bar and the Michigan Association of Municipal Lawyers.
She has also been a delegate to the State Bar Representative Assembly and serves on a disciplinary panel of the State Bar Attorney Discipline Board. She is a graduate of Michigan State University (1967) and holds a Masters Degree in political science from the University of Michigan (1968). She received a JD (cum laude) from the University of Michigan Law School in 1974.
