
Joanne E. Osendarp specializes in international trade law. She is considered to be an authority in this practice area. She is known in the international legal circles as the Government of Canada’s principal US-based lawyer in the high-profile softwood lumber dispute between Canada and the US.
In the softwood lumber dispute, she has led Canada’s legal team in numerous negotiations and dispute resolution proceedings. She headed internal and outside counsel teams, including WTO, NAFTA and US Court of International Trade appeals.
Her areas of focus are Arbitration, Digital Trade & Customs, International Trade, Investment Treaty Arbitration, Sanctions, Export Controls & Anti-Money Laundering, Trade Remedies & Trade Agreements. Attorney Osendarp holds the Chair of Hughes Hubbard & Reed’s International Trade practice group. She is also a member of the International Arbitration practice group.
She has represented the likes the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). She advised on matters such as countervailing duty (CVD), antidumping (AD) and other trade remedy proceedings, dispute resolution proceedings, state-to-state arbitrations, and international trade negotiations.
Her clients in international trade and investment matters include governments, industry associations, export credit agencies, and companies. She has secured bar admissions in the District of Columbia, New York, and Ontario.
Diversity Journal, a publication dedicated to promoting and advancing diversity and inclusion in the workforce, has honored Joanne Osendarp with “Women Worth Watching” award in 2018.

Benchmark Litigation awarded her with Local Litigation Star in New York, for the period 2013-2015. They gave Top 250 Women in Litigation award to her for 2012-2014. She also won Benchmark Litigation’s Local Litigation Star for International Trade in Washington, DC, from 2011-2012.
Guide to the World’s Leading Women in Business Law recognized her as Leading Practitioner in the period 2010 – 2017. She was named in The Best of the Best USA in the period 2012 – 2017 in International Trade. The Best of the Best 2010 named her One of America’s Top Pre-Eminent International Trade Law Practitioners. PLC Which Lawyer had endorsed her for dispute resolution and arbitration in Washington, DC in 2010.
She was Co-Chair of the International Trade and Arbitration practice at Weil Gotshal before she joined Hughes Hubbard. Before starting a private practice, she worked as senior counsel to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Department of Justice for the Government of Canada.
Joanne E. Osendarp completed B.A. in 1981 and M.A. in 1983 from the York University. She went to the University of Ottawa and obtained LL.B in 1986.
