Joel Powell is almost a lifelong Jacksonville resident. He graduated from Terry Parker High School and attended the University of North Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice with high honors in 2002. Mr. Powell then attended the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 2005.
Mr. Powell began practicing law by serving the Jacksonville community as an Assistant State Attorney at the State Attorney’s Office for the Fourth Judicial Circuit. While there, he gained extensive trial experience and worked in nearly every unit, including a prolonged tenure in the Special Assault Unit and Homicide/Gun Unit.
After leaving the State Attorney’s Office, Mr. Powell worked for a Fortune 500 insurance company, where he served as in-house counsel and obtained valuable insight into how insurance companies analyze and resolve claims. As in-house counsel, he also guided outside counsel in matters involving ongoing litigation.
Mr. Powell has recently been appointed by Mayor Lenny Curry to serve on the Civil Service Board in Jacksonville. When away from his practice of law Mr. Powell enjoys the outdoors and hiking with his faithful dog Sammie.
