John Vasily

John M. Vasily is Co-Chair of the firm’s Financial Institutions Group. His practice is dedicated to handling insurance M&A deals, public and private, in the United States and other major markets. Mr. Vasily occupies a unique space in the insurance transactional market, focusing his practice on significant U.S. insurance M&A deals as well as transactions in emerging markets, including Asia, Africa, Latin America, Russia and Europe.

Few, if any, lawyers practicing in the insurance space have done as many deals, in as many countries, as Mr. Vasily. Among his recent third-party reviews:

Mr. Vasily has been an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University Law School since 2002, lecturing on international securities laws. He received a J.D. from Georgetown in 1982 and a B.S. from Villanova University in 1979.

Mr. Vasily serves on the Board of Visitors of the Georgetown University Law Center and on the Advisory Board for the Law Center’s Corporate Counsel Institute. He is a recent recipient of the Law Center’s Paul R. Dean award, awarded to distinguished alumni.

  • AXA and AXA Equitable Holdings on the initial public offering of AXA Equitable Holdings on the New York Stock Exchange for approximately $4 billion, and AXA Equitable Holdings in its offering and sale of $3.8 billion of senior notes.
  • AXA in the acquisition of Bermuda-based XL/Catlin Group for $15.3 billion in connection with insurance M&A and regulatory matters.
  • Prudential Financial in its minority stake investment in Peak Reinsurance.
  • American International Group in its $5.56 billion acquisition of Validus Group, a Bermuda-based, NYSE-listed, (re)insurance company.
  • AmTrust Financial Services in a strategic transaction with Madison Dearborn for a portion of AmTrust’s U.S. fee businesses valued at $1.15 billion.
