Jonathan Weinberg is an associate with the Supreme Court & Appellate practice in Mayer Brown’s Washington DC office. His practice focuses on issues and appeals in intellectual property and technology-related matters.
As a registered patent attorney with a PhD in computer science, Jonathan has extensive experience at all levels of the patent system. He routinely briefs district courts on dispositive issues of patent law and brings patent-related appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where he clerked for the Honorable Jimmie V. Reyna.
He has appeared before the Federal Circuit in over a dozen such appeals in the past two years. In 2018, Super Lawyers Magazine has named him one of Washington DC’s Rising Stars for Intellectual Property.
Beyond patent law, Jonathan has briefed courts and counseled clients on a variety of other technology-related issues, including software copyright, cybersecurity, and digital search. He also maintains an active pro bono docket and has obtained notable appellate victories for his clients.
Last year, for example, he obtained reversals at the Seventh Circuit for a prisoner alleging Eighth Amendment violations and at the Eleventh Circuit for a debtor undergoing bankruptcy. The Supreme Court heard and affirmed the bankruptcy case unanimously this year.
Jonathan earned his JD cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as president of the Intellectual Property Law Association. He received his MS and PhD in computer science from the University of California, San Diego, where his research focused on large-scale and distributed computing.
