Having acquired years of practical and real-world experience as a lawyer, financier, producer, and distributor of independent feature films, José L. Martinez represents clients in all facets of acquisition, development, finance (debt, equity and gap financing), production, and distribution of film, music, television and audiovisual programming.
José’s diverse legal career in the entertainment sector includes work with Palm Pictures as co-founder of Arthouse Films, and General Counsel of Maya Cinemas North America, a developer of state-of-the art movie theaters in the western United States.
Notably, José co-founded Maya Entertainment, a mini studio dedicated to the production, acquisition, and distribution of Latino-themed entertainment content, where he served as General Counsel, President, and Head of Acquisitions.
He also co-founded LatinoReview.com, an online entertainment news source viewed through a Hispanic lens, and co-founded the Santa Fe Film Festival. José’s broad and varied background and practical hands-on experience in the entertainment sector gives him a unique advantage in understanding and finding practical solutions for his client’s most complex business objectives.
In addition to José’s entertainment industry experience, he also represents clients in a broad range of transactional real estate matters involving the acquisition, development, financing, and operation of commercial real estate.
José has represented developers in leasing and asset management matters, including the negotiation of purchase and sale agreements, ground leases and financing transactions (including construction loans, permanent take out loans, joint venture agreements, mezzanine, New Markets Tax Credit, and EB-5 financing).
