Joseph C. Tarpine III defends employers, insurers, self-insured employers, and municipalities in workers’ compensation claims throughout Maryland and in the District of Columbia.
He defends clients ranging from locally owned establishments to multinational corporations, representing them at hearings before the Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commission and in jury trials, as well as before the Maryland Court of Appeals and the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.
He also represents clients before the District of Columbia Office of Workers’ Compensation, the District of Columbia Administrative Hearings Division, the District of Columbia Compensation Review Board, and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
With a record of over 100 jury trials and experience handling complex matters — including mold and chemical exposure claims — Joe has several times won verdicts setting precedents favorable to his clients and their industries.
His service to clients extends to all types of workers’ compensation claims, including sensitive and high-profile claims, and all aspects of litigation, negotiation, and policy review. These clients have included small businesses, municipalities, Boards of Education, hospitals, hotels, construction companies, pharmaceutical companies, food service companies, and assisted living facilities.
A recognized authority on workers’ compensation defense, Joe regularly presents seminars to other attorneys, insurance adjusters, risk managers, and human resources personnel.
Before entering private practice, Joe earned valuable trial experience working for the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, and before that he clerked for the New Jersey Superior Court, where he gained behind-the-bench insights into the legal process and judicial decision-making.
