Joe Cowan concentrates his practice on the defense of insurance companies accused of breach of contract, bad faith and fraud. Mr. Cowan has extensive experience advising and representing insurers in claims arising from mass catastrophes or natural disasters, and he has handled an extensive number of business interruption claims. In addition, Mr. Cowan defends companies and individuals involved in litigation arising from catastrophic injury or death. His experience also includes trial and appeals in the areas of business torts, products liability, employment litigation, construction litigation, legal malpractice defense and other complex civil litigation.
Mr. Cowan attended Cumberland School of Law on a full presidential scholarship. At Cumberland, Mr. Cowan served a member of the Cumberland Law Review and as a teaching fellow. In addition, Mr. Cowan successfully competed in Cumberland’s highly regarded trial advocacy program, which led to his selection to represent Cumberland on its national trial team. Upon his graduation in 1996, Mr. Cowan was selected by the faculty to join Curia Honoris, Cumberland’s honor society.
Mr. Cowan is a member of the Council on Litigation Management and a member of the 2011-2012 Class of Leadership Vestavia Hills.
