Joseph William Spransy
Joseph W. Spransy was born in Durham, NC, was reared in Chapel Hill, NC, and graduated with a major in mathematics from King College (Bristol, TN) where he was on the Dean’s List, was a reporter on the Kayseean student newspaper, and played varsity soccer. After teaching high school in the Virginia public school system for two years, he enrolled in the University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill, NC. As a law student, he was on the Dean List, was inducted into Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity, and was elected Secretary of the Student Bar Association and served as Secretary of the Student Bar Foundation. Upon graduation he received the Van Hecke-Wettach Award, given annually to the Outstanding Citizen of the graduating class of the Law School.
Mr. Spransy practiced with the Birmingham law firm of Bradley Arant Rose & White from 1973 until 1979, when he assumed the leadership of the Law Department of United States Pipe and Foundry Company, Jim Walter Resources, Inc., Sloss Industries, Inc., and their affiliated subsidiaries of Jim Walter Corporation and Walter Industries, Inc. After retiring in October, 2003 as Vice President and Assistant Secretary of U. S. Pipe and Assistant Secretary of Walter Industries, Inc., he opened a solo practice, dividing his time between his offices in Birmingham and Pell City. His practice is dedicated primarily to the areas of wills, trusts, estate planning, probate and estate administration; business, corporations, and commercial law including business mergers and acquisitions; and antitrust compliance.
