Karam J. Saab focuses his practice on building patent portfolios to protect his clients’ newest and most important products. Prior to major product releases, Mr. Saab helps his clients with their new products by developing comprehensive strategies to protect inventions for years into to the future, both domestically and abroad.
He manages patent portfolios for several Fortune 500 companies and works with smaller clients to grow their patent presence.
Mr. Saab has significant experience working in the Internet of Everything (IoE)/Internet of Things (IoT) space, and has managed worldwide patent portfolio strategy and development for several home automation devices and systems, including thermostats, smoke detectors, and television receivers.
Mr. Saab tailors to the needs of his clients through various programs available through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to speed prosecution and to obtain quality patents.
He frequently travels to the USPTO and its various satellite offices to meet with patent examiners to expedite the patent process for his clients, effectively obtaining patents at a lower cost by decreasing the number of rounds of patent prosecution necessary to receive an issued patent.
Currently, Mr. Saab is focused on artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous driving systems, home automation products, battery technology, satellite-based data distribution systems, electronic control systems, and cloud-computing applications.
Prior to joining the legal profession, Mr. Saab was an electrical engineer at BAE Systems where he designed and developed hardware and software for military production programs.
Experience:
- Managed client teams through multiple product releases in the IoT/IoE space. Developed U.S. and worldwide patent prosecution strategy and targeted specific potential infringers which helped clients secure scores of patents around their products and cloud-based aspects of their product line.
- Advised client in its development of a new medical device in cooperation with a multinational partner. Obtained strong patent protection worldwide which helped our client secure a favorable licensing position with their multinational partner.
- Spent two seeks in Namibia creating a nonprofit organization whose mission is to distribute solar lamps and flashlights to villages that do not have electricity.
- Helped client define product aspects of its new home automation division which focused on protecting and defining a patent prosecution strategy both within the U.S. and worldwide.
