Karen Lai is a registered patent agent in the Squire Patton Boggs San Francisco office. Her experience includes patent prosecution and portfolio management for start-up and mid-size pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well as for research universities and institutions. Representative areas of focus include small and large molecule pharmaceuticals and formulations, biotechnology, bioengineering and clean technology.
Before joining the firm, Karen worked in-house at a pharmaceutical company to develop products that were in-licensed from partners for final-stage development and clinical approval. In her work, she supported efforts to address product life-cycle management, IP-related regulatory issues and licensing matters.
She also managed patent prosecution for compounds at all stages of development, including preclinical and approved drugs. Prior to her legal career, she worked in science policy at the National Academies of Science and as a process engineer for a large pharmaceutical company.
Karen has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and has a wide variety of experience with different technical areas, including bioprocess research and development, viral gene delivery and stem cell technology.
