Kevin J. Spinella has a diverse patent practice that focuses on drafting and prosecuting patent applications related to digital electronics, computer software, optical systems, online advertising, financial technology, and business methods.
A former patent examiner, his prosecution experience includes crafting responses to both domestic and foreign patent office communications. Kevin has experience in invalidity analyses and conducting patent searches for novelty and clearance.
He has drafted dozens of patent applications, appealed multiple applications to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and prosecuted patent applications in multiple countries. Kevin conducts inventor interviews and examiner interviews, and advises clients on portfolio strategies.
He also has experience with determining patent eligibility under Section 101. Prior to joining Finnegan, Kevin, who has an MBA, worked at Booz Allen Hamilton for three years as a technology business consultant, advising the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on policy and compliance matters.
During his undergraduate studies, Kevin worked at Ansys, Inc., testing engineering simulation software used to develop product design prototypes and solutions. Kevin’s pro bono practice comprises providing representation for disabled veterans before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veteran Claims and the Federal Circuit.
