Ms. Alden has provided expert advice where she evaluated and provided detailed advice on substantive and procedural issues relating to the complex field of federal sector employment law.

These cases concerned issues such as whether a Department of State employee has a right to challenge his termination at the Merit Systems Protection Board, whether a self-employed woman who contracted with a federal agency would be allowed to pursue her harassment claim through the agency’s EEO process, whether an employee should be forgiven for filing her discrimination complaint late, and the appropriate steps when a whistle blower challenges his agency’s efforts to fire him.

In 2010, and for the first time in over 27 years, the Merit Systems Protection Board held oral argument on cases of special significance, due to their broad potential impact on the Federal civil service and the merit system. On October 18, 2010, Ms. Alden presented oral argument to the Board in one of these historic cases.

Ms. Alden has been active in local organizations, including the D. C. Bar Association where she served as the Vice Chair of the Bar’s Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Committee. That appointment followed an extended term as a Member of the Committee. Ms. Alden has been deeply involved in the work of the D.C. Bar’s Labor and Employment Section, where she chaired and presented CLEs and other courses.

She chaired and moderated the D.C. Bar’s Employment, Labor & Employment Section’s CLE course on the Fundamentals of Employment Law in the District of Columbia. She served as the Public Sector Chair of the District of Columbia Bar’s Labor and Employment Section from 2001 through 2004, where she prepared and presented programs on a variety of employment law topics.

Ms. Alden is a frequent speaker, lecturer and moderator. She is also an active member of the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) and the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association (MWELA). See below for details.

Ms. Alden received her J.D. in 1992 from the Washington College of Law of the American University and her B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University in 1989 and attended its School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna, Italy. Ms. Alden is admitted to practice law in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.
