Lien was born in Nha Trang, Vietnam. At the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, Lien was twelve years old when she immigrated to the United States with her family. As a teenager, Lien overcame the language barrier by putting in 4 to 5 hours a night to look up each word in the English dictionary she needed to know for her assignments.
She also overcame economic hardship by working as a waitress from high school through college to help support her family and put herself through school. Lien was the first in her family to attend college.
From an early age and through her life experiences, Lien learned the value of perseverance, hard work, and dedication. Since she was 8 years old, Lien wanted to be a lawyer. She loved people and dreamed of making the world a better place. Her passion for the law and its power to facilitate fairness and equal justice compelled Lien to focus on doing whatever it took to become a lawyer.
Before pursuing a career in law, Lien worked as a liability adjuster, investigator, negotiator, litigation adjuster, and claims supervisor for major insurance companies from 1986 to 1994. While working full time and raising a family, Lien attended law school at Western State University in Orange County.
In law school, Lien received the American Jurisprudence Award for family law and tort classes. She graduated in 1993 and earned a tax certificate with her J.D. degree.
Hired by a major insurance company in 1994, Lien worked as an insurance defense lawyer to handle personal injury litigation cases. She was the managing attorney from 1999 to 2008 for the legal department of an insurance company in San Diego County.
While working as an insurance defense lawyer, Lien took on pro bono family law cases. In addition, she assisted her brother and husband, who are both lawyers, while they were in private practice with their family law and business litigation cases.
