Lorelei Van Wey is a partner with Lash & Goldberg LLP in the Miami office. Lorelei’s practice areas include complex commercial litigation, health care litigation, employment litigation, consumer defense litigation and sports and entertainment litigation. She also maintains an extensive appellate practice and heads up the Firm’s appellate practice group.
In more than 20 years as a lawyer, Lorelei has represented numerous corporate and individual clients in state and federal trial and appellate courts, before state and federal administrative agencies, and in arbitration proceedings.
Lorelei has handled complex disputes for clients in a variety of industry sectors including hospitals and health care, sports and entertainment, securities, banking and finance, and consumer debt collection. Her practice includes the defense of class actions, federal statutory claims and qui tam cases.
Among her recent cases, Lorelei drafted the appellate brief that resulted in the Eleventh Circuit’s affirming a final summary judgment the Firm obtained in favor of a national hospital client against a physician’s high-profile race discrimination claims. She was also instrumental in obtaining dismissal, after an evidentiary hearing, of a plaintiff’s $40 million claim against a hospital client for damages under the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act.
Additionally, Lorelei has helped forge positive business resolutions of complex matters, including a long-standing dispute and litigation between a Palm Beach County hospital and a group of physicians who held a ground lease on hospital property and provided services at the hospital; a long-standing lawsuit between two groups of physicians over the breakup of their practice group; a prominent sports figure’s multimillion dispute over a license agreement; a sports broadcaster’s claims against a video company for unauthorized use of his name and likeness; and class actions involving consumer debt collection services.
Lorelei received her undergraduate and master’s degrees in journalism from Ohio State University. She worked for 14 years in journalism, primarily with Knight-Ridder Inc. as an editor at the Detroit Free Press and The Miami Herald. Her last position at The Miami Herald was as the Daily Business News Editor.
Lorelei graduated from law school from Ohio State University and is admitted to practice in both Florida and Ohio. While in law school, she was Articles Editor of the Ohio State Law Journal and recipient of the award for outstanding achievement and service to the Ohio State Law Clinic. She authored an article for the Law Journal and recently published articles in the practice-group journal of the Florida Bar and a magazine for healthcare executives. Lorelei is a participant in various volunteer organizations and pro bono activities.
