Maja Zerjal is an associate in the Business Solutions, Governance, Restructuring & Bankruptcy Group. Her practice focuses on the representation of debtors, creditors’ committees, creditors and equity holders in in-court and out-of-court restructurings.
Maja has been involved in some of the largest reorganization cases in the United States. She is currently representing the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico in its effort to restructure Puerto Rico’s outstanding debt load of more than $70 billion, and was previously involved in the representation of the Government Development Bank for Puerto Rico, which included the development and drafting of the Puerto Rico Public Corporation Debt Enforcement and Recovery Act.
Maja also represented B. Endeavour Shipping Company in its chapter 15 case and regularly publishes articles on current chapter 15 and other trends in International Corporate Rescue, a corporate restructuring and insolvency/bankruptcy journal, where she serves on the editorial board.
Maja maintains an active pro bono practice and is a member of the Firm’s Pro Bono Committee. She recently secured asylum for a young man fleeing severe persecution in Africa, In addition, she serves on the Associate Council and the Proskauer Women’s Alliance Steering Committee.
Maja is an active member of the Harvard Law School Association’s Executive Committee and the Harvard Law School Association of NYC’s Board. While at Harvard, Maja was senior editor of the Harvard Business Law Review, and a research assistant for EU Law Professor Gráinne de Búrca.
